A Little Night Music 'Enlightened' Lithophane Night Light - handcrafted in Irvine, CA  Intricately detailed, these beautiful night lights are lithophanes.  Invented in France in 1827, the lithophane is a porcelain engraving that 'comes alive' when lit from behind.  To create a lithophane, the design is first carved in wax, on a light table to help the artist see the image as he/she works. A mold is made from the carving, then porcelain is cast into the mold. Dried, finished by hand, then fired in a kiln at 2300 F, each piece is then carefully examined.  The 'Enlightened' series of these lithophanes have vibrant ceramic underglaze colors that are applied directly to a brilliantly translucent white porcelain to create these lovely nightlights. With their opaque decorative frame and the highly translucent image in the center, they are a framed work of art that comes alive when lit!
